Julie Giroux on February 7, 2024 at 2:10 pmLog in to ReplyBeing required to submit a march really doesn’t serve any purpose. We all know from whence we came. There are better, more difficult forms of music to judge one’s merit by. Music is an art form and ABA is one if not THE echelon of our field. While we struggle to attain legitimacy on the level of the Symphony Orchestras, requiring people to play marches does not help that goal in the least. Don’t get me wrong I like marches but if I want to know if a group is good, I don’t want to hear them play a march. I want something much more intricate and difficult, music that reflects our current repertoire which also provides a much larger platform for musicality and expression. Carl Bjerregaard on February 10, 2024 at 2:52 pmLog in to ReplyPerforming a march well is an art form all conductors should be able to accomplish. I've heard all too many view it as a race, a way to show an audience the agile fingers of the players. I support the move. David Waybright on February 19, 2024 at 6:05 pmLog in to ReplyI agree with Julie on every point. Candidates are advised to put marches on anyway. Too much micromanaging is not needed nor desirable. Steven Davis on February 19, 2024 at 6:40 pmLog in to ReplyTo me, no one form of music should be treated more importantly than any other. Although, I enjoy a well done march from time to time.
